Do You Have What It Takes To Be No. 1?
Well, here’s your chance to prove it. Enough talking about
how good your school is. It’s time for you to show everyone
which college is the best in the business. Pit the best brains
and brawn in your class against fellow students from across
Ontario. Let’s see who is the smartest and fastest. Let’s find
out who’s fit and who’s not. Let’s see who has the most spirit
and the right to be called No.1!
The Competition
The Challenge is an event like any other. It is a true test
of all of the skills it takes to be successful in the emergency
services field. Competitors get a chance to interact with fellow
students from colleges across Ontario, speak with emergency
service recruiters, as well as representatives from various
agencies and organizations.
Colleges may enter up to 3 Teams of 16 students. Each Team
must have an instructor assigned as a Mentor. Students must be
enrolled in the second or final year of their respective
academic program. On the day of the Event, Teams will be divided
into five groups: 1 Team of 8 and 4 Teams of 2. The Team of 8
will compete in a thrilling on and off-road obstacle course that
includes seven stages. The objective is simple. The Team with
the fastest time wins!
While this is underway, the four remaining Teams of 2 will
each be competing in a different event. Two students will
undergo a basic practical First Aid test, while two other
students will take part in the Communications & Observation
test. This combines observation skills, note taking and report
writing. As this is happening, two other students will be
completing a General Knowledge test of 100 multiple choice
questions which will encompass basic math, comprehension,
spelling and a service-specific component. Finally, the last two
students will undergo a real emergency service Fitness Test.
What makes this competition so exciting is that every
competitor on each Team must train for all elements of the
Challenge. On the day before the Event, names from each school
will be drawn at the Challenge Reception to see which student is
competing in what event.
The Challenge Reception
On Friday, September 30, 2011, Team Captains and their
instructors will be invited to join us for the Challenge
Reception to be held at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Oakville,
Ontario.
This informal evening will start with a cocktail reception
and brief opening ceremonies. This will be followed by a
delicious BBQ, including dinner and dessert, after which, the
competition order for the 10 remaining college teams will be
randomly drawn on stage. Students and instructors will get a
chance to meet colleagues from across Ontario, as well as
representatives from various emergency service organizations,
sponsors and participating charities. Best of all, there will be
door prizes and the presentation of the Team Captain
Scholarships.
Volunteer
The College Challenge is a fantastic day for all
students. For those not participating on a Team, we invite them
to come out and support their fellow students. Show your college
spirit and join in the fun. There are plenty of opportunities to
take part, including volunteering as a member of our
Organization Committee or Course Marshalls. A great way to
complete your required community hours.
